🌱 What Is the Climate Card?

The Climate Card is a transportation pass introduced by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It allows unlimited use of public transportation in Seoul for a fixed period

With one card, you can use:

  • Seoul subways

  • Seoul city buses

  • Seoul Bike (Ttareungi) in some plans

  • Hangang River Bus (in certain services)

The system was introduced to encourage public transportation use and reduce carbon emissions.

🌍 Can Foreigners Use It?

Yes.
Anyone can use the Climate Card, including foreigners and tourists. There are no restrictions based on nationality or residency.

To make it easier for visitors, Seoul also introduced a short-term “tourist pass” version of the Climate Card.

💳 Types of Passes

The Climate Card offers several usage options depending on how long you plan to stay.

Short-Term Tourist Pass

Good for visitors staying in Seoul for a few days.

Typical prices include:

  • 1-day pass: about 5,000 KRW

  • 2-day pass: about 8,000 KRW

  • 3-day pass: about 10,000 KRW

  • 5-day pass: about 15,000 KRW

Monthly Pass

Good for residents or long-term visitors.

  • About 62,000 KRW for subway and bus use

  • About 65,000 KRW including Seoul Bike (Ttareungi)

The pass provides unlimited rides during the selected period.

📍 Where to Buy

Foreign visitors can buy the physical Climate Card at:

  • Tourist Information Centers (e.g., Seoul Tourism Plaza, Myeongdong)

  • Subway station customer service centers

  • Convenience stores near subway stations

The card itself usually costs about 3,000 KRW, and you then load the pass you want to use.

👍 Why It’s Useful

The Climate Card is especially convenient for people who:

  • commute daily in Seoul

  • plan to visit multiple places in the city

  • want to avoid repeatedly paying for individual transit fares

The Seoul government estimates that users can save around 30,000 KRW per month on transportation costs.

⚠️ Things to Know

  • The card works only within the Seoul public transportation network.

  • Some lines such as the Shinbundang Line are not included.

  • Taxis cannot be paid with the Climate Card.

  • If you travel outside Seoul’s coverage area, additional fares may apply.
